Welcome to 2020!
Get ready for a BIG year for girls’ rugby. Our girls’ rugby program went from strength to strength in 2019 and with the Olympic Games taking place in Tokyo later this year, there will be increased interest in Rugby Sevens with the Australian Girls heading to Tokyo to defend their 2016 Gold medal.
To ensure Manly Village clubs are in a position to encourage participation in girls’ rugby MJRU will be hosting a ‘Girls Try Rugby’ event.
Date: Sunday February 9
Time: 2pm to 4pm ‘Girls Try Rugby’.
Followed by Combined U18 Girls & Senior Mermaid training from 4pm to 5pm for those wanting to watch the girls in action.
Venue: Denzil Joyce Oval, Abbott Road, North Curl Curl.
THE GOAL
This event is about bridging the gap for those girls who are considering rugby but want to give it a try first. The aim is to introduce rugby to girls and their parents from the young minis in primary school through to the teenage girls wanting to play Rugby 7s.
WHO’S COMING
We are fortunate to have three current Aussie 7s Women coming along to this event. Alicia Lucas (née Quirk), Sariah Paki and Faith Nathan.
Josh Mitchell, Claudia Bell and Emily Robinson from NSW Rugby will also be present on the day, shining a light on the girls’ rugby pathways offered through MJRU.
MJRU have also organised to have a huge range of inspirational coaches and players there on the day including Mike Cross from Try Time Rugby, a number of Manly Mermaids, Mermaids coach - Tua Marsters, James from J-Train Athletic Performance and our MJRU girls rep coaches – Stevie Berryman, Put Berryman, Edith Nathan, Mania Marsters and Damien Cummins.
TRY RUGBY
We invite all girls interested in giving rugby a go to come down to the ‘Girls Try Rugby’ afternoon and we encourage you to bring your friends too. After all, friends that play together, stay together.
